Case Studies

Across projects in North America, Europe, and Asia, FETCH has enabled fuel conversions, validated performance at scale, reduced technical and commercial risk, and supported successful deployment decision.

Beginning in 2022, FETCH, as a senior consultant has supported the first coal to biomass pellet fuel electric utility in North America to decarbonize.

Case Study 1: Coal to Clean Fuel Transition for a Canadian Utility

Challenge:

NB Power Corporation faced the complex challenge of transitioning Belledune Generating Station, a 460 MW coal-fired generating station, toward a lower-emissions future while maintaining grid reliability and operational performance.

FETCH Solution
FETCH was engaged as a senior advisor to guide the transition from coal to sustainable biomass fuel using steam-treated (“black”) wood pellets. Working closely with NB Power and key stakeholders, FETCH helped shape a phased implementation plan beginning with fuel testing and progressing toward full-scale conversion.

Results
The project established a practical roadmap for decarbonizing an existing thermal power asset while preserving dependable electricity generation. The Belledune transition now stands as a leading example of how utilities can approach complex energy transformation.

Case Study 2: Market Entry Strategy for a Steam-Treated Pellet Producer

Challenge:
A global pellet producer invested in advanced steam-treated pellet facilities but struggled to secure buyers among utilities outside their domestic market.

FETCH Solution:
FETCH developed a go-to-market strategy targeting utilities in North America and Europe. We prepared technical documentation, positioned the producer’s product for utility procurement processes, and facilitated introductions with potential buyers.

Results:

  • Secured first long-term supply contract with a European utility.

  • Increased credibility through alignment with industry standards.

  • Identified additional market opportunities in Asia.

  • Established producer as a competitive player in the global pellet market.

Case Study 3: Efficiency Gains for a North American Boiler Operator

Challenge:
An industrial boiler operator faced recurring slagging and fouling issues, causing unplanned outages and high maintenance costs.

FETCH Solution:
FETCH advised on fireside additive solutions designed to mitigate slag and improve combustion efficiency. We worked with operators to adjust dosing strategies and monitor performance.

Results:

  • 25% reduction in unplanned downtime.

  • Improved fuel efficiency, lowering operating costs.

  • Extended maintenance intervals, saving both time and money.

  • Increased operator confidence in long-term performance.
